The hospitality industry is fiercely competitive, and hotels look for new, high-tech solutions to meet their guests’ needs and requirements. Of course, one absolute basic requirement is access to high-speed Internet and fast, reliable Wi-Fi.
But how do you deliver Wi-Fi in properties that don’t have physical cable networks (Ethernet)? The solution is DOCSIS. DOCSIS is a low-cost and effective solution that can make Internet (and Wi-Fi) available across hotels, using the existing Coax television cables (also known as coaxial cables). Docsis Technology
Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (or DOCSIS) is the perfect solution for delivering broadband Internet connection where there is no Ethernet network, but there is a Coax cable network. It’s built on the same idea as the ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) solutions we used to have in our homes.
Installing DOCSIS is straightforward and not an overly complicated process. In short, a broadband connection is brought into the building. That IP signal is then converted into a signal that can travel over the Coax network. In each room, there is a small modem, that converts the signal back to IP, and offers Ethernet connections. This means that vertically anything IP-based, such as IP-phones, digital TV solutions, WiFi routers etc. can be connected.
So DOCSIS consists of a physical (PHY) layer involving hardware such as cable modems, cable modem termination systems and a data transmission frequency. This hardware delivers Internet connectivity to hotel guests.
The second layer is the media access control or MAC layer. It allows each device with MAC address to handle large information loads.
